Historie
Plemeno vzniklo v 17. století v USA. Jejich předci byli španělští a angličtí koně. Quarter Horse byl původně využívám k dostihům, podle kterých dostal i své jméno: čtvrtkař. Je to totiž nejrychlejší plemeno na čtvrt míle. Mezi jeho předky bychom našli spoustu slavných anglických plnokrevníků. V 19. století se začaly běhat delší dostihy a tak Quarter Horse ztratil své primární uplatnění. Proto se využily jeho další vynikající vlastnosti pracovního koně. Stal se nepostradatelným pomocníkem na dobytčích farmách a i díky němu vzniklo westernové ježdění. Dodnes je Quarter Horse vyhledávaným westernovým koněm.
Povaha
Quarter Horse je velmi vytrvalý, silný a pracovitý kůň. Je inteligentní a má tzv. Cow Sense. Je věrný svému pánu a vytváří si s ním vztah. Je také odolný, tvrdý a obecně má velmi dobrý temperament.
Konstituce
Quarter horse má menší hlavu se silným, svalnatým krkem. Lopatky jsou strmé, plece silné. Hřbet je kratší, rovný, záď je výrazně svalnatá. Končetiny jsou pevné, svalnaté s kvalitními kopyty.
Srst je bílá, hnědá, ryzá nebo černá. Vyskytují se i plaváci a palomino. V kohoutku měří 147 - 160 cm.
Využití
Quarter Horse je dodnes vynikajícím pracovním koněm. Využívá se ve westernových soutěžích i jako spolehlivý a vytrvalý rekreační kůň.
